Attention all Traditional Naturopaths in PA

December 2018

It’s been a busy year and we want to update our members as best we can with information we recently compiled after meeting with some legislative committee members, legal counsel and our new lobbyist group in Harrisburg this past November 2018.

The Need for a Professional Lobbyist

Yes the time has come when we need a eyes, ears and a voice in Harrisburg to make sure we keep the practice of traditional naturopathy alive in the state of Pennsylvania. We are also protecting your right to practice freely as a Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy, and everyone right to “Freedom of Choice” when it comes to their health and healthcare.

We have hired an experienced and eager team to represent us, The McNees Winter Group LLC. We look forward to working with them to protect our rights and help navigate us during these legislative procedures.

Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy and Title Control

One of our biggest concerns was title control. The way it stands now most of us will remain using the same titles we have been. The only two titles at this time that HB 516 and 2016 ACT 128 state that we cannot use are: “Naturopathic Doctor” or “Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine”. HB516 states “It shall be unlawful for an individual to use these two titles unless that person is “Registered” as a Naturopathic Doctor with the board. Yes, the initials ND are still safe-guarded for us to use.

Education Requirements of the Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy

The educational programs you have taken in order to be able to practice as a Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy should follow certain national standards. The educational institution must use the minimum guidelines or more as set-fourth by the “World Health Organization” (WHO) in the teaching, degree and certification of the Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy. Your degrees, certifications etc. should be displayed in a visible space in your office.

HB 516 Naturopathic Doctor Registration Act- Enforcement

Currently the Naturopathic Doctor Registration Act is in committee with the State Board of Medicine as they will oversee this act. Rules, regulations and guidelines for registration are in the process of being drafted by the State Board of Medicine and must be completed and approved before the registration process can begin. We are watching this closely as it evolves over the coming months.

Senate Bill 834 Status

As far as we have been told SB 834 is still in committee and will expire there this December 2018.
